Looking across the lake at The Grand Hotel National

When I first arrived in Lucerne, I was welcomed by an OMG view of the Grand Hotel National from across the lake, as I arrived via the train station. The hotel is only about a seven minute walk from the train station, so I’d definitely recommend the walk depending on your luggage situation, as you walk past the Chapel bridge, a quaint square and along the lake before arriving. Upon arriving in the main lobby, I was greeted by the nicest and most welcoming staff. The front desk staff continued to be so helpful during my entire stay, assisting with directions, reservations, and recommendations.

The Room:

If the room in the Grand Hotel National could be described in one word, it would be breath-taking. But, let’s be honest, there are many other words that would perfectly fit this sanctuary! The bed was the most exquisite, comfortable, and plush bed I have ever slept in. I sunk in and melted away from the world when I got in and it was just heavenly!

Then there was the view! The view from the balcony offered panoramic views of the mountains and lake that surround this pristine Swiss city. The little boats and swans that dot the lake and the fog that hangs over the lake in the early morning make you feel as if you’re in a story book. Make sure you have plenty of space on your camera, as you will snap probably a thousand photos (you really can never have too many photos!). With that being said, don’t forget to request a view of the water when booking!

Early morning view from my balcony

As a lover of all things skin-care, you can imagine my excitement when I saw the Molton Brown products displayed ever-so-elegantly in the bathroom. To this day, the Ylang-Ylang scent from Molton Brown still brings me back to this place.

The Food:

It simply wouldn’t be right to not order room service when staying somewhere so elegant. So, that I did! Don’t skip on the hot chocolate when ordering, as it was beyond delicious and was the perfect accompaniment when sitting on the balcony taking in the magic around you.

Restaurant 1871 is located inside the hotel and offers a nice place for a casual and relaxed meal during a mid-day break from conquering the city. I went here at night for a drink and dessert upon returning the to the hotel. The atmosphere had a nice ambience, with relaxing music and dim lighting- very swanky.

The Café César Bar is located on the far side of the hotel, right on the lake. This bistro offers a nice stop for a coffee, tea, pastry, or small bite.

The Location:

When booking a hotel while traveling, the location is typically my first priority. I love being in the middle of everything, because I did come to visit it after all. The location was one reason I was hooked on this hotel in particular. Situated right on the lake, the Grand Hotel National is within walking distance to many of Lucerne’s sites, such as the Chapel Bridge, the Lion monument, and old town Lucerne. It also boasts amazing view of Mount Pilatus.

Arriving at the Grand Hotel National:

  • Train: the train station in Lucerne has trains arriving from many towns in Switzerland and beyond
  • Car/ bus: About 50-60 minutes drive from Zürich’s airport
  • Air: Zürich, Berne airports (but since you can hop a train easily, you could really fly into wherever made the most sense for you)

Other Amenities Not to be Missed:

  • Grotto-inspired pool
  • World class spa
  • Tennis courts
  • Outdoor dining on the lake
  • Workout facility

This hotel offers the perfect place to call home while visiting Lucerne. There are so many simple, elegant touches in this hotel everywhere you turn. The ambience of this hotel compliments the stunning scenery of this enchanted city so wonderfully. Make sure not to miss this gem while traveling through Switzerland!
